5th Annual Dilla Days features hip hop events at House of Dance and Icehouse on April 7

MINNEAPOLIS — February 7, 2018 — The Twin Cities chapter of the James Dewitt Yancey Foundation will host a pair of events April 7 to celebrate the music of Dilla, aka J Dilla or Jay Dee. Twin Cities Dilla Days returns for a fifth year with two events: a combined hip hop dance and music production battle, and a show featuring legendary producer and DJ Pete Rock, plus several well-known local acts.


Dilla Day Event 1 (All Ages)

The first event takes place on Saturday, April 7, from noon to 6 p.m. at the House of Dance in Hopkins. Eight local producers creating live music will compete in the Jay Dee Beat Batch Warz competition, and hip hop dancers will battle in the Dilla Dance battle.

Dilla Day Event 2 (21+)

That night at the Icehouse in Minneapolis, revered New York producer and DJ Pete Rock delivers a DJ set that highlights Dilla’s impact on musical production. Local artists including Sun & La, Kanser, Hakim Bey, Niles, and Big Wiz will also be performing. Big Wiz and Niles host, with DJ Francisco and DJ Espada spinning between sets.

The events honor the life and musical genius of producer's producer J Dilla. Dilla’s mother and founder of the James Dewitt Yancey Foundation, Maureen Yancey (aka Ma Dukes) will attend both events.

One of the most influential hip hop producers of all time, Dilla won a worldwide fanbase through his production style and innate understanding of music. A child prodigy, he mastered a range of musical instruments simply by observing and listening. That instinctive musical talent translated into production and sampling genius. Dilla produced for Detroit’s Slum Village and internationally renowned artists including A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde, Common, Janet Jackson, Busta Rhymes, De La Soul, The Roots, Brand New Heavies, and Eryka Badhu. His life was cut short by lupus in 2006. He was 32.
